Apple has spent millions developing a Sapphire screen that is said to be stronger than concrete

Over the years Apple has changed the design of the iPhone a couple of times and in the process it has tried to make it a bit more durable and have less components that could break and shatter when dropped. When the iPhone 4 was introduced people had tons of issues with cracking not only the display but also the back, and then Apple changed that with the iPhone 5. Now Apple is said to be working on a new screen technology that won't scratch even if rubbed against concrete.
Having spent over half a million dollars on this technology so far Apple is really hoping for a home run by bringing Sapphire to its displays. The Sapphire screen is more than two times as strong as Corning's Gorilla Glass, which is currently a standard in the mobile world for displays. This year Apple brought a little bit of Sapphire to the iPhone 5S, but only used it for the camera lens and the fingerprint scanning TouchID home button.
According to a report from International Business Times, Apple has already paid $578 million to GT Advanced Technologies, a Sapphire crystal manufacturer, in hopes of speeding up its next-generation, larger capacity furnaces, which would allow low-cost manufacturing of the crystal in the volume Apple would need.
Apple will need to be able to get the displays at the best price available in order to help keep the cost of the devices at the price points we have seen in previous years. With the rumors of a larger screen, new camera technology and more, Apple still needs to be able to make money off the sale of these devices.
If Apple is able to bring a screen technology like this that would be able to withstand the abuse of not only everyday life but extreme situations it is likely that many people will be interested in grabbing the iPhone 6 upon release.
Implementing Sapphire on top of the rest of the rumors seems to indicate that Apple is hard at work behind the scenes on making the iPhone 6 a killer device that will appeal to the masses
